Here at Keyes Toyota, Toyota service and maintenance go beyond routine oil changes and tire rotations. We’re here to ensure that you stay protected on every ride, which is why we’re sharing tips and tricks for car care between service appointments. That way, you can protect yourself and your vehicle during an emergency, such as a breakdown.
What Should I Do If My Car Breaks Down?
Our Toyota cars are designed to last, but breakdowns happen. Here are the steps you’ll want to take if your vehicle breaks down on the road:
- Put on your hazard lights. It’s essential to let other drivers know what's going on so you and your vehicle can stay safe. As soon as you are made aware of an issue, put on your hazards.
- Get to a safe location. You’ll want to get your vehicle out of traffic as soon as possible. Navigate away from moving vehicles and other dangers, preferably to a flat location.
- Employ the brakes. Even if you are able to find a flat location, it’s a good idea to employ the emergency brake and chock your wheels against the curb, if possible.
- Make yourself visible. Make sure that you indicate to other drivers that you are pulled over. A raised hood is a universal indication that your vehicle has broken down, but flares or reflective cones are helpful as well.
- Call for help. Once you and your vehicle are safe, reach out to your roadside assistance or local towing team so you can get home quickly.
