2018 Toyota C-HR Debuts in America

If you think rush hour traffic around Los Angeles is slow, stop to consider the many delays experienced by the Toyota C-HR. We first saw it back in 2014 and we've been waiting for it ever since. The production spec model made its first appearance earlier this year in Geneva, and this week it finally showed up in America, making its debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. It'll be a bit longer 'til it's available at Keyes Toyota, but it's looking like all the waiting will be worthwhile.

The "C-HR" in this subcompact SUV's name means "Coupe High Rider." The "High Rider" part makes sense given the crossover design. The coupe part makes sense once you see the new Toyota SUV in profile. Where many of its competitors use optical illusions to create the appearance of a sloped roof line on their crossovers, this is the real deal. Based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, its stiffer body and low center of gravity promise handling that's as sharp as its looks.

The first model year will feature two trims, the XLE and XLE Premium. Both will have the same four-cylinder engine (with 144 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque) and continuously variable transmission for their powertrain. Front-wheel drive with torque distribution is standard.

Other features include the Toyota Entune infotainment system, AM/FM/HD radio, Bluetooth, an AUX jack, and a USB port. Early indications are that in addition to the usual passive safety features, a number of active safety and driver assist features will be standard equipment. We're still waiting for confirmation on pricing and option packages, and it also remains to be seen whether AWD will be an available option for the first year.

The Toyota C-HR comes to Keyes Toyota in mid-2017 as a 2018 model. If you'd like to learn more, or if you're just itching to get behind the wheel of a new Toyota car like the 2017 Toyota RAV4, visit Keyes Toyota at 5855 Van Nuys Blvd in Van Nuys, CA today.

Get to Know the 2017 Toyota Corolla iM

It's been a long time since we've seen a Toyota Corolla hatchback in the United States. They've been available to the rest of the world as the Toyota Auris, but they never quite caught on in the States. The last time was the Toyota Corolla-derived Toyota Matrix, which the company discontinued in 2013. Now they're trying again. San Fernando drivers can get behind the wheel of the 2017 Toyota Corolla iM, available now at Keyes Toyota.

For now, there's only one trim. A 1.8 liter 4-cylinder engine with 137 horsepower, paired to a manual transmission, is standard. You can upgrade to a CVT (continuously variable transmission) for slightly higher gas mileage and Sport Driving Mode. The exterior is re-styled slightly with a more aggressive look than the sedan version of the Toyota Corolla. The rear is also different, not only because of the hatchback, but also due to the chrome-tipped exhaust and rear spoiler. Its sporty looks are rounded out by sport suspension and 17-inch wheels.

You won't find much here by way of options and upgrades; since there's only one trim, it's all about the standard equipment. That includes a rear backup camera, keyless entry, and a leather-trimmed steering wheel with audio controls. There's a generous 20 cubic feet of cargo volume (that's more than some crossovers). Fuel mileage is an EPA estimated 27 city / 35 highway / 30 combined miles per gallon, contributing to a low total cost of ownership.

The 2017 Toyota Corolla iM is practical. However, it also has its fun side, thanks to Toyota iM Display Audio. This infotainment system has a 7-inch display, USB 2.0 port, HD radio, voice recognition, and Bluetooth. You can upgrade it to run navigation alongside the applications it already supports.

Ready to test drive your 2017 Toyota Corolla iM? Visit your San Fernando area Toyota dealership. Keyes Toyota is located at 5855 Van Nuys Blvd in Van Nuys, CA.

*With manual transmission; 31 combined MPG with optional CVT.

What's Behind the Toyota Investment in Getaround

We're as used to seeing new Toyota cars in the news as we are seeing them on the streets around Van Nuys and here at the Keyes Toyota showroom. Every once in a while, the Toyota Motor Corporation finds new ways to make headlines. Early in 2016, the Toyota Research Institute, a dedicated R&D initiative, drew attention. A new round of articles in recent days says a lot about the company's future.

It's no secret that the traditional ways to keep a car, whether through ownership or through leasing, have declined over the last few years. In fact, John Zimmer, president of the ride-sharing company Lyft, raised eyebrows not too long ago when he predicted that car ownership as we know it would be phased out by 2025. We're not sure to what degree we agree with that, but it doesn't take the foresight of Isaac Asimov to realize that our relationship to cars is evolving in much the same way the vehicles themselves have.

The way the Toyota Motor Corporation is responding to those changes is interesting, not least because they stand not only to respond to the future but to actually shape it in this case. The Toyota-owned Mirai Creation Investment Limited Partnership, which normally invests in research and development, pumped an estimated $10 million into Getaround, an up-and-coming ride-sharing service. The payoff for the investors is that Toyota now has a foothold in the rapidly growing ride-sharing economy.

Toyota cars, like the company that makes them, are steeped in tradition. However, both the cars and the company have evolved with the times, discarding some traditions and inventing others in order to stay relevant. The Toyota RAV4 (which invented the compact crossover) and the Toyota Prius (which made hybrids viable) are results of that approach.

We think it's a sensible approach. After all, when the future is unclear, wouldn't you rather be in the driver's seat instead of waiting to see what's next? With that in mind, see what all those years of research, development, and evolution have led up to. Come to the Keyes Toyota showroom at 5855 Van Nuys Blvd in Van Nuys, CA today for a test drive!

Winterize Your Car at Keyes Toyota

The last time the Los Angeles area saw significant snow was almost 70 years ago. Based on what we see in our service center, that's around the last time some of you had your cars winterized. Even though the balmy winters here are the envy of much of the US, that doesn't mean you don't have to winterize your Toyota car or SUV. Here's why Keyes Toyota should be your first stop to do just that.

In a place that basically has two seasons -- late spring, followed by summer, and back again -- it's easy to think of winterizing as somebody else's problem. Just because Mother Nature doesn't have the same kind of wild mood swings they're used to in upstate New York doesn't mean you should neglect seasonal maintenance.

Maybe you bought a Toyota RAV4 from us last spring, or maybe you're the fourth owner of a 1989 Toyota Camry. Either way, we're willing to bet that one reason you bought a Toyota vehicle is because you know they're reliable. The thing is, they don't get there on their own. They take regular maintenance (new tires and brakes, fluid changes, new filters, and more) in order to deliver the best performance.

That's where our Toyota service center near Los Angeles comes in. Our technicians are trained on Toyota vehicles and use OEM Toyota parts. Just as important, they and the rest of the Keyes Toyota family will make sure you understand what your vehicle needs right now, what can wait, and when to bring the car in again. We know you have other things going on in life, so we take the guesswork and forgetfulness out of the picture.

Help your car, truck, or SUV run its best. Don't wait 'til the next time you see snow in LA County to winterize your car. Come to Keyes Toyota at 5855 Van Nuys Blvd in Van Nuys, CA today. You'll thank us, and your car will thank you, for it.

Skip Black Friday, Buy a Toyota Car Instead

Thanksgiving is coming, and we're already running down our mental checklists. Do we have enough marshmallows for the yams? How do we keep the dinner table conversation away from politics? How do we keep Uncle Gary away from the pumpkin pie 'til dessert is served? And do we really feel like waiting on line for six hours for a flat screen TV? We don't have easy answers to the first few questions, but we do know this: if you get a new Toyota car or SUV at Keyes Toyota, you can skip the lines and sleep in late on Black Friday.

It's a great time to do just that because, this year, Keyes Toyota is able to offer some excellent manufacturer incentives. Through December 1, well-qualified customers can get cash-back incentives, low APR rates, and lease incentives on most 2016 and 2017 Toyota models. That means significant savings for the customers we serve from Van Nuys to North Hollywood.

Those of you looking for Toyota Certified Used Vehicles aren't left out in the cold, either. Certain pre-owned cars and SUVs (the Toyota Camry, Toyota Prius, Toyota RAV4 and Toyota Corolla) qualify for 1.9% APR financing, while all other TCUV models qualify for 2.9% APR financing. In addition, a 12-month/12,000-mile Limited Comprehensive Warranty, a 7-year/100,000-mile Limited Powertrain Warranty, a year of Roadside Assistance, and other perks are included.

Weigh your options (and your option packages) carefully, and then come to Keyes Toyota. We serve Van Nuys and North Hollywood from our showroom at 5855 Van Nuys Blvd in Van Nuys, CA. We'll help with your finance, trade-in, or lease questions. We'll help you find the right car, and help you check off one more person from your holiday shopping list, even if you're that someone. Sounds better than hand-to-hand combat over doorbusters, doesn't it? Stop by today and ask your Van Nuys Toyota dealer for details!

Toyota Day at 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show

Thanksgiving isn't the only big upcoming event we're looking forward to at Keyes Toyota. In just a couple of weeks, the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show opens at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Although it's open to the public between November 18 and November 27, there's one particular date you'll want to keep open.

That date is November 18. Not only is that opening day (except for the press, who are treated to the AutoMobility expo from the 14th to the 17th), it's also the second annual Toyota Day. If you're attending -- and we suggest you go at least once in your life, because this really is a car-lover's dream -- bring a friend. For one day only, all you have to do is show the key to your Toyota vehicle when you buy your general admission ticket and your friend gets one too. For free.

Many of the car companies that will be in attendance have kept a tight lid on what they'll show this year, and the Toyota Motor Corporation is no exception. If we had to guess (and we do, for now), we'd expect to see new Toyota models like the 2017 Toyota C-HR and 2017 Toyota Prius Prime, as well as a possible curtain call for the Toyota Yaris rally concept. What we're really hoping for is a preview of a 2018 Toyota model, or a surprise appearance by a concept car nobody's seen yet.

If you can't make it to the LA Auto Show in time for Toyota Day, don't worry. Keyes Toyota doesn't have concept cars, but what we have may actually be better: new Toyota models you can actually get in and drive. We serve Los Angeles and Oxnard from our showroom at 5855 Van Nuys Blvd in Van Nuys, CA, and best of all, we don't charge admission. Why not come in today for a test drive?

2017 Toyota Camry XSE V6: A Closer Look

When the Toyota Camry debuted in 1979, Northridge drivers could've been forgiven for not noticing. It was just another release from a company that was still fighting for respect. A lot changes in 37 years. The Toyota Motor Corporation is respected the world over, and the Toyota Camry has outlasted not only many other models, but also enjoyed a longer run than some entire car companies. The 2017 Toyota Camry XSE V6 available now at Keyes Toyota represents the pinnacle of a modern classic.

There are many ways to get a 2017 Toyota Camry. Like other new Toyota cars there are multiple trim levels, and like select other Toyota vehicles (the Toyota RAV4 comes to mind) it comes in hybrid variants too. Besides the XSE V6 trim, there are six other trims available between gas and hybrid versions.

So what sets the Toyota Camry XSE V6 apart? The engine is one thing, since it swaps the base 2.5 liter four cylinder 178 horsepower engine for a six cylinder engine that displaces 3.5 liters and puts out 268 horsepower and 248 lb.-ft. torque. The only other trim on which it's available is the luxurious XLE trim.

There's plenty more to set it apart from other new Toyota cars. In addition to a roster of luxury and convenience features, the 2017 Toyota Camry XSE V6 gets some updates from 2016, including the option for a Blue Streak Metallic finish, an update to the Entune Audio Plus infotainment system, Qi wireless charging, and a new navigation suite. If you're looking for options, explore the Advanced Technology package, which tacks on lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, and a pre-collision system.

Since its introduction in 1979, the Toyota Camry has earned itself - and the Toyota Motor Corporation - some well-deserved respect. In many ways, the rise of the Toyota Camry hasn't just mirrored the rise of the company that builds it. It's helped to drive that success. To see the best of what Toyota has to offer, visit Keyes Toyota. We serve Northridge and Los Angeles from our showroom at 5855 Van Nuys Blvd in Van Nuys, CA, and we're just a phone call away at 800-296-3052.

Toyota Sees an Electric Future

A recent conversation between Toyota chief engineer Satoshi Ogiso and the folks at Forbes magazine caught our attention. It says a lot about where Toyota is right now as a company, where they see their future, and what that means for what you're likely to see on the roads around Glendale and North Hollywood as well as the Keyes Toyota showroom.

The first key takeaway: it's now cheaper to build a hybrid like the Toyota Prius than it is to build its diesel equivalent. That's a pretty clear sign that the days of diesel are numbered, at least as far as Toyota is concerned. Given tighter emissions standards and the multiple hits diesel has taken in the press in recent years, there's a clear business case for moving away from diesel as it is. If Toyota already has an option in its arsenal that's better, and cheaper to boot, that business case becomes a no-brainer.

Cost concerns are also slowly receding for EVs (Electric Vehicles). It already costs roughly the same, or even a bit less, to build a short-range EV as it does to build a hybrid. As manufacturing, storage, and economies of scale are refined, longer-range EVs will also approach the cost of a hybrid, though Ogiso suggests this isn't likely 'til 2025.

By 2050, he continues, 90 percent of new vehicles will be EVs. There are hurdles to clear before we get to that point -- most of the country hasn't embraced electric vehicles and infrastructure like high-capacity charging stations that keeps them running -- and there are cultural concerns that would need to be overcome as well. In the States, we like big vehicles. And we like suburbia, even if we have a love-hate relationship with the long commutes it brings with it.

Some of us are already thinking ahead about the cars we'll be driving because we're thinking ahead to the kind of world we'll leave to future generations. That makes the rise of EVs (and their falling costs) a big deal, and we're glad that Toyota is leading the way. We invite you to your Glendale-area Toyota dealership to see what's new and what's next. Call Keyes Toyota at 800-296-3052, or visit our showroom at 5855 Van Nuys Blvd in Van Nuys, CA today.

Is This the New Toyota Supra?

Lots of people across the United States still love the Toyota Supra. It continues to have plenty of fans in Van Nuys and right here at Keyes Toyota. The last one rolled off the lines in 2002, and the faithful have awaited its return ever since. That long-awaited comeback may be closer than it seems, at least if recent rumors based on sightings of a new Toyota car in heavy test camo are to be believed.

This wouldn't be the first time the Toyota Supra was rumored to be returning to production. In 2007, Toyota showed the Toyota FT-HS concept in Frankfurt. Seven years later, the Toyota FT-1 concept took its first bow in Detroit. Both had the kind of sinewy lines and promised performance that reminded folks of the old Toyota Supra.

There are two other causes for optimism. The Toyota FT-1 concept raised its head again this year in Tokyo. Then, there's the aforementioned test mule. Like many production prototypes, it bears a resemblance to earlier concept vehicles, but with its shape toned down some. It doesn't look like any other production car from Toyota, which lends credence to the rendering shown by Jalopnik, which broke the news.

Akio Toyoda made one simple promise when he took the reins at Toyota a few years ago: he would bring the fun back to driving. He wasn't kidding. Toyota has adopted a design aesthetic and an approach to the drive that's transformed even staid old standbys like the 2017 Toyota Camry. A new Toyota Supra would be a jewel in the crown for the company. While we're waiting (with bated breath), why not stop by Keyes Toyota at 5855 Van Nuys Blvd. in Van Nuys, CA or call your Van Nuys Toyota dealership at 800-296-3052 to arrange a test drive of a great new Toyota car today?

2017 Toyota Model Preview

Is it 2017 already? Well, it is here at Keyes Toyota. Some 2017 Toyota models are already on our lot, and more are just around the corner. Below, we're charting some of the changes that are in store for Los Angeles new car buyers looking for their next car, crossover, or minivan.

2017 Toyota Corolla: Talk about major milestones: the Toyota Corolla turns 50 in 2017. What will you be getting for the big five-oh? The Toyota Corolla gets a mid-cycle redesign that features the same powertrains, but a more updated look. There'll also be an anniversary edition, about which we'll feature more information when it becomes available.

2017 Toyota Highlander: The Toyota Corolla won't be the only vehicle getting a new set of "clothes." The 2017 Toyota Highlander comes in for a mid-cycle refresh as well, getting a new SE trim level that adds sport suspension and some other perks, plus a 3.5 liter V6 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission drive train that it shares with the Toyota Tacoma. New front and rear fasciae are on tap, and Toyota Safety Sense active safety features will be available as standard equipment across the lineup.

2017 Toyota Prius Prime: The Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid gets a new name, but that's not all. Its body is redesigned, as is its battery pack. The latter now has twice the kilowatt-hours of its predecessor, and will have an electric-only range of 22 miles on a single charge without using engine power.

2017 Toyota Sienna: Like the Toyota Highlander, the Toyota Sienna inherits the same 3.5 liter V6 engine that the Toyota Tacoma pickup uses. The earlier six-speed automatic transmission is replaced by a new eight-speed version.

If you don't see a model listed above, it's likely only receiving minor trim changes, or none at all, for the 2017 model year. But if you're looking for a new Toyota vehicle, or if your old Toyota car is coming off lease, there's a lot to like about the 2017 lineup. Curious? Call your Los Angeles Toyota dealership at 800-296-3052 or visit Keyes Toyota at 5855 Van Nuys Blvd. in Van Nuys, CA today.

2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Back in Action

When the 2016 models arrived at Keyes Toyota, there was something missing from the Toyota Tacoma lineup. What was missing before is back now. The 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is back in the saddle, and that's great news if you want a tough and capable off-road performer. Here's what makes this particular truck, at this trim level, so unique.

Your Northridge, CA area Toyota dealer has never lacked for four-wheel drive options. After all, each Toyota Tacoma can be outfitted with 4WD. But if you're serious about off-roading, there are two different ways to get there in a Toyota Tacoma. First, there's the TRD Off-Road trim. For better performance on rough terrain, it features a low-speed/low-gear cruise control known as Crawl Control, a Multi-Terrain Select system that lets drivers customize performance on dirt, gravel, rocks, and mud, and a locking rear differential.

Sounds good, right? Except the TRD Pro includes all the best of what the TRD Off-Road offers and ups the ante. Its ground clearance is higher, its suspension -- from its Fox shocks to its coil and leaf springs -- is stronger, and it even features Kevlar-reinforced Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain tires. It wears its brute strength on its sleeve with a special grille design and graphics, Rigid-brand fog lights, and other design flourishes.

Its short box and crew cab configuration gives you plenty of space for passengers and gear, while the 278 horsepower V-6 engine gives you enough power to haul everything no matter what conditions you may come across. For Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select, you'll need the six-speed automatic transmission; opt with the six-speed manual if a clutchless start in low gear is a higher priority.

Any brand can say it's serious about off-roading, and just about every truck manufacturer does. With the 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, Toyota puts its money where its mouth is. There's even a nifty GoPro mount so you can document your off-road travels. See the complete package at your Toyota dealership serving Los Angeles, CA. You can call Keyes Toyota at 800-296-3052, or just drop by 5855 Van Nuys Blvd in Van Nuys, CA for a test drive.

Toyota C-HR Due Soon

The Hollywood, CA drivers served by Keyes Toyota are in for a bit of a surprise in the spring of 2017. We wouldn't be surprised if we heard "Arigato gozaimashita, Toyoda-san" from our customers the first time they see the 2017 Toyota C-HR at our showroom. When he took over as CEO of Toyota, Akio Toyoda promised more fun from new Toyota cars, and this quirky new crossover lets everyone know that he was serious.

We tried not to get our hopes up when the Toyota C-HR was shown at the 2014 Paris Motor Show as a three-door concept, and again in Frankfurt in 2015 when it was shown as a four-door. After all, nobody thought a crossover this quirky would see daylight in that form. It had -- and still has -- an easy grace that sets it apart from anything else on the road, combining crossover utility with a slightly lower ground clearance for better handling.

The production model shown at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year made it clear that Toyota was committed to what made their new crossover so interesting. While it's technically a compact crossover, there's something in its profile that suggests a coupe. In its European versions it comes standard with front-wheel drive (AWD is optional) and a choice of gas or hybrid powertrains. It offers more space than some of its closest competitors, and is sure to turn heads on the road.

While the 2017 Toyota C-HR is already available in Europe, the powertrain options may not be the same once this compact crossover comes to the States. Once those details -- and others -- are available, we'll report them here. In the meantime, there's plenty of fun driving to be had at your Toyota dealership serving Los Angeles, CA, from the stylish Toyota Yaris to the off-road thrills of the Toyota Tundra TRD. Thank you, Mr. Toyoda. To find out more, visit Keyes Toyota at 5855 Van Nuys Blvd. in Van Nuys, CA or call 800-296-3052 today.
