AGL Comes to Toyota Camry

There are many changes coming to the 2018 Toyota Camry. You won’t even see one of the most important ones when you visit Keyes Toyota. Even though it’s unobtrusive, AGL is no less important for that. What is it, and what does it offer Los Angeles car shoppers?

AGL is short for Automotive Grade Linux. Your Toyota car already has an ECU (Engine Control Unit), but AGL is meant for many of your car’s other — more advanced — systems not handled through the ECU. That’s a lot of components already, and there’ll be more in the years to come.

Toyota Motor Corporation was first onboard with this Linux-based system, so it’s fitting that the 2018 Toyota Camry should be the first vehicle to use AGL. Here are a few of the systems impacted by this new operating system:

     Telematics
     Heads-up display
     Instrument panel
     Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
     Autonomous driving features
     Active safety systems

You probably recognize these as features already present in many new Toyota vehicles. However, AGL has some key advantages over the current operating system.

To begin with, this should be a smoother and more stable operating system. There’s also the open-source nature of Linux, which makes it easier to get improvements and new features to market. That open source backbone also means a higher degree of flexibility, making it easier for carmakers like the Toyota Motor Corporation to look ahead to cars as they will be, rather than just accepting them as they are now.

The 2018 Toyota Camry is just days away from your Toyota dealership near Los Angeles. When you come to see the car, you won’t see AGL, but it’ll be there nonetheless… working away quietly to improve your driving
